Kent's most prestigious walking route is the North Downs Way, which runs from Farnham in Surrey to Dover, with several sections following the ancient Pilgrim's Way. Some 157 miles in length, this National Trail is one of 15 in England and Wales and forms part of the South East Walks Network. The North Downs Way is closely linked to the Pilgrims Way, a route used by pilgrims on their way from Winchester to Canterbury to pray for St Thomas a Becket. Many fine churches and chapels still remain. The National Trail is well waymarked and is primarily for walkers, although sections are open to horseriders and cyclists
